Young Women In Skilled Trades event

Young Women In Skilled Trades event

Women in Skilled Trades EventHURON-PERTH — The Avon-Maitland and Huron-Perth Catholic District School Boards are encouraging young women to consider the skilled trades as a career.

The boards are collaborating on an event in Stratford Wednesday that features a panel made up of women who have found success in what is considered a non-traditional career path for girls.

Avon-Maitland Pathways Coordinator, Jeff Piro tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that the Young Women in Skilled Trades event is geared to girls attending Grades 9 through 12.

He says this is the second year for the annual gathering which builds on the success of last year’s inaugural event.

Piro points out that there more girls each year are being drawn to girls-only tech classes in Avon-Maitland high schools.

He hopes that in the future, the classes will become completely integrated.

Piro encourages participants by saying that a skilled trade certificate can lead to satisfying work in other areas of the economy in both the private and public sectors.
